Classical Musicians Add Romance And Finesse To Any Wedding Reception

Coming from a sizable family with almost twenty cousins and countless second cousins, I've attended numerous weddings over the last forty years. To be honest I always found weddings a little boring because they all seemed the same. After half an hour or so yawning through the religious ceremony, endless moments lurking outside the church followed by a meal in some venue or another and eventually attending the night do where the wedding DJ; usually my uncle, would play the same set of pop hits he's seemingly spent his entire life playing.
In recent years, however, I've seen a significant change in the entertainment laid on at the wedding receptions I've attended. And believe me, it's a change for the better. Yes the DJ does get the opportunity to dust off his vinyl, but only when the wedding band are taking a break, and much to my surprise, the wedding bands which are being booked have been of a very high standard.
The first time my eyes were opened regarding the types of bands for weddings people can hire was when a Gregorian choir filled the room with the most beautiful and ethereal sound I've ever heard. The harmonies which emerged from the five unamplified voices was both moving and heart warming and to this day, they remain one of the most memorable wedding bands I've had the pleasure to have heard.
More recently I attended a wedding where a classical guitarist performed a variety of popular classics as the daylight ebbed. Again this was unamplified, unintrusive, melodic and moving and his repertoire spanned from Bach to Bacharach. What surprised me was he even kept the youngsters happy by performing classical-esque arrangements of more modern compositions such as Oasis' 'Wonderwall' and Robbie William's 'Angels'. Later in the evening a more traditional wedding band performed a variety of soul and Motown hits which got everybody dancing; everybody except me that is. I prefer to listen rather than trying to work out which foot goes where.
Unfortunately none of my family are posh enough to even consider booking a string quartet or a harpist. To be honest the classical guitarist seemed a little too high brow for the audience (myself excepted of course). Yet what did impress me was the fact that they'd chosen something other than just a wedding DJ and thrown in some variety with the guitar player and, although the band were one of those run-of-the-mill wedding bands, they did perform flawlessly and got plenty of people dancing the night away.
